A simple language for generic dialogues: "Speech acts" for communication

چکیده

The paper presents the preliminary results of an experimental project for a new agent communication language. The applicative research context suggesting such an aim is the one traditionally identified by the Artificial Intelligence in Education community: this context, as it is motivated in the paper, is generic enough to represent a wider class of applications, i.e. all those that privilege communication among autonomous (open) human and artificial agents. In order to satisfy the needs and constraints of the applicative context a first model/architecture, called STROBE, has been designed and a prototype has been implemented. STROBE is supposed to become the kernel of the new language and of its applications. The main property of STROBE is that its description language coincides with its implementation language, i.e. Scheme. Basically, STROBE shows how generic communication may be described and implemented by means of STReams of pragmatically marked messages to be exchanged by agents represented as OBjects interpreting messages in multiple Environments. Recent advancements in the project are producing new modules to be integrated in the STROBE architecture, in particular: a re-implementation of the language for software agents KQML: Knowledge Query and Manipulation Language for allowing a richer set of performatives to enhance the original pragmatic markers. This integration is the main issue discussed in the paper. Other steps, such as a multitasking operating system to manage multiple communication, a Scheme-based Simple Reflective Interpreter in Continuation Passing Style to allow meta-reasoning, and a Scheme interpreter in Java to integrate higher level descriptions with lower level interface and networking functionalities, in a platform-independent fashion, are indicated as ongoing developments. An outline of the expected functionalities of the language under development may allow to appreciate if and how it may fit the expected ones, i.e. cognitive simplicity for designing and controlling multi-agent generic dialogues, including human and artificial communication facilities.

Pragmatic Representations in Iranian High School English Textbooks

Owing to the growing interest in communicative, cultural and pragmatic aspects of second language learning in recent years, the present study tried to investigate representations of pragmatic aspects of English as a foreign language in Iranian high school textbooks. Using Halliday’s (1978), and Searle’s (1976) models, different language functions and speech acts were specifically determined and...

On the Relationship between Emotional Intelligence and Directive Speech Acts Preference

Language and emotion are two related systems in use, in that one system (emotions) impacts the performance of the other (language). Both of them share their functionality in communication. Since the nature of foreign language classrooms is ideally interactional, emotional intelligence (EI) gains importance. The aim of this study was to find out whether one's total emotional quotient and its com...

Role of Monolingualism/Bilingualism on Pragmatic Awareness and Production of Apology Speech Act of English as a Second and Third Language

The present study investigated the pragmatic awareness and production of Iranian Turkish and Persian EFL learners in the speech act of apology. Sixty-eight learners of English studying at several universities in Iran were selected based on simple random sampling as the monolingual and bilingual participants. Data were elicited by means of a written discourse self-assessment/completion test (WDS...

Effects of Concurrent Group Dynamic Assessment on Iranian EFL Learners’ Pragmatic Competence: A Case of Requests and Refusals

Pragmatic competence is one of the most important components of successful communication; also, it is the most difficult aspect of SLA. This study aimed to explore the effects of concurrent group dynamic assessment (G-DA) on Iranian EFL learners’ learning of requests and refusals, following a mixed method design. In the experimental part of the study, 2 intact classes were homogenized by a pret...

Exploring EFL Learners’ Use of Formulaic Sequences in Pragmatically Focused Role-play Tasks

Communicative language use largely entails regular patterns consisting of pre-constructed phrases or sequences. These sequences have been examined by many researchers to find the situation-based formulas which may help L2 learners follow a possibly more target-like speaking system. This study, therefore, explored two categories of formulaic expressions including speech formulas and situation-bo...
